A Mega Millions lottery jackpot worth an estimated $540 million (€489 million) has been won by one lucky ticket-holder in the US.

The sole jackpot-winning ticket in Friday night's Mega Millions draw was sold in Indiana, said Virginia Lottery spokesman John Hagerty.

The consortium of lottery organisations that runs Mega Millions said a ticket matching all five white balls and the yellow ball would win an estimated $540 million.

The winning numbers were white balls 8-19-20-55-73 and yellow ball five.
