Campaigners seeking a full public inquiry into the murder in the Maze Prison of the leading loyalist, Billy Wright, in 1997 have circulated a petition in Northern Ireland in support of their demands.

The petition has been timed to coincide with the Orange Order's Twelfth celebrations. The organisers said they had had a very positive response this week, especially at the Drumcree protest.

When completed, copies of the petition will be handed to British Prime Minister, Mr Blair, at Downing Street by members of the Wright family.

Yesterday Wright's father, David, went to Stormont to lobby members of the Assembly and to collect signatures for the petition.

Mr Wright confirmed that Sinn Fein had also been asked to back the petition. "Of course, I asked them to support me. Why shouldn't I?" said Mr Wright.

"I welcome the support of Sinn Fein and the SDLP, just as I welcomed the opportunity to speak with representatives of the Dublin Government. This issue crosses all political boundaries."
