California based technology company Xilinx, which employs 360 people in Dublin, has reported a 21 per cent fall in second quarter revenues to $289.3 million compared to the same period last year.

"The macroeconomic climate continues to be difficult for the semiconductor industry," said Mr Wim Roelandts, Xilinx's president and chief executive officer.

"Xilinx continues to be impacted by weakness in our primary end markets of communications and storage and servers and by excess inventory levels held by our major customers." He added.

Xilinx designs and produces complex semiconductor chips capable of being programmed individually for use in a wide range of electronic systems.

The company also develops and provides the software tools necessary to programme these chips as well as predefined system functions that customers load as software into the Xilinx programmable logic devices.

The company said its £41 million expansion of its advanced R&D, engineering and operations centre in Dublin is now well advanced and on schedule for completion in 2002.
