Over 80 jobs are to be lost at a carpet factory in Youghal, Co Cork, a Fine Gael TD has said.

David Stanton said 86 jobs would be lost before Christmas at Couristan in Youghal. No one from the company was available for comment.

Mr Stanton said the town had lost about 2,000 jobs in the past seven years and called on the Government to "do all in its power" to provide employment and industry in the town.

"People now have to travel out of the town in order to find employment with the resulting negative effect on local businesses in the town. Extreme pressure is also put on those who have to travel up to a 60-mile round trip every day when they should have the opportunity to work in their own town," he said.

"We have had both Mary Harney and Michael Martin in Youghal over the last number of years yet Youghal is still waiting for industry and jobs," he said.

Couristan was founded in 1926 and has its headquarters in New Jersey in the United States. It has two carpet factories, one in the Republic of Ireland and one in England.
