Ms Sarah Flannery, the Co Cork schoolgirl who won the Esat Telecom Young Scientist of the year title, has also won the 11th European Union Contest for Young Scientists.

Ms Flannery (17) was awarded her prize in Thessalonika, Greece, at the weekend and will now represent the EU at the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar where she will attend the 1999 Nobel Prize Ceremonies.

More than 80 young scientists from 31 countries competed. The competition was open to the winners of national science contests from the 15 EU member-states and guest countries. First prize included €5,000 (£3,950).
