A TEENAGER charged with the murder of a Polish man in Dublin last month was banned from the Drimnagh area and warned against drinking or taking drugs when he was granted bail by the High Court yesterday.

The 17-year-old youth, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was charged last weekend with the murder of Pawel Kalite on Benbulben Road, Drimnagh, on Saturday, February 23rd.

Yesterday at the High Court Mr Justice John Edwards granted bail to the youth on conditions including that he stay out of Dublin 12 and reside with a relative in another part of the city.

Bail was fixed on a cash lodgement of €4,000, a bond of €10,000 entered into by the youth's father and a personal bond of €12,000.

The judge also banned the youth from having contact with any witnesses or potential witness and to stay away from any potential co-accused in relation to the murder. The youth will also have to sign on daily at a Garda station, be subject to a curfew from 10pm to 7am and not seek to obtain a passport or any travel documents.

The judge also made it a condition of bail that the youth stay off drink and drugs.

"That does not mean that you are not to get drunk or high, it means you are to stay off them completely," the judge said.

The judge told the youth that gardaí had liberty to come back to the court to have bail revoked if any of the conditions were not complied with.

The youth, who is from the southeast inner city area of Dublin, was accompanied to the court by relatives.

Moving the application for bail counsel for the youth, Michael Bowman said that the youth's family was agreeable to any conditions that the court felt was appropriate to impose in the circumstances.

The State had objected to bail being granted. However, Det Garda Eamon Maloney asked the court to impose stringent conditions if bail was to be granted. The youth was remanded in custody by Dublin District Court last Saturday.

On Wednesday he was further remanded in custody to St Patrick's Institute for a period of two weeks to allow time for preparation of the book of evidence in the case.

Earlier in the proceedings the court heard that the young man was arrested at 10.24pm last Friday night at Crumlin Garda station, in the presence of his father and charged with the offence at 11.05pm.
