THE TEENAGER charged with the manslaughter of a garda has been sent forward to face trial.
Jamie McGrenaghan (18), Cashel, Kerrykeel, Co Donegal, is charged with the unlawful killing of Garda Robbie McCallion (29), who died less than two weeks after he was seriously injured while investigating the theft of a car at Tara Court, Letterkenny, Co Donegal, on March 26th.
Mr McGrenaghan, who sat his Leaving Certificate this year, was sent forward at yesterday’s sitting of Letterkenny District Court to appear at Letterkenny Circuit Criminal Court on November 24th.
He has also been charged with dangerous driving causing Garda McCallion’s death, theft of a car and reckless driving endangering the lives of gardaí Joanne Doherty and Shane Lavelle.
Det Garda Alfie McHale told Judge Conal Gibbons that he served the book of evidence in the case to Mr McGrenaghan at 10.55am that day.
He was released on his own bond of €100 and on High Court bail of €4,000. His mother, Margaret McGrenaghan, who was with him in court, has been approved to stand bail.
The conditions of the bail mean Mr McGrenaghan must reside at Gortnacraw, Kerrykeel, observe a 10pm to 8am curfew and be sober.
He must also sign on daily at Milford Garda station, refrain from contacting his co-accused and must not apply for a passport.
Judge Gibbons granted an application by Mr McGranaghan’s solicitor Kieran O’Gorman to have the interview tapes in the case made available.
Co-accused Cathal Dunleavey (19), Meentagh, Glenvar, Kerrykeel, was also sent forward for trial. He is charged with stealing a car on the same occasion. He is serving time for petty crime and motoring offences and was remanded in custody also to appear at the circuit court in November. Legal aid for a junior and senior counsel was granted for both young men.
Garda McCallion, from Swinford, Co Mayo, died in Beaumont Hospital in Dublin on April 7th, where he had been in a critical condition since the incident.
