Gardaí investigating the death of a taxi-driver in a crash involving a stolen car in Dublin yesterday morning have made a second arrest.

A 16-year-old youth was arrested at the Mater Hospital at 1.30 p.m. He is now being detained at Mountjoy Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

A second teenager, also 16, was arrested at the Mater Hospital at 11.30 a.m this morning. He is also being detained at Mountjoy Garda Station.

It is understood one of the two suspects is believed to have been the driver of a stolen car that ploughed into a taxi at the junction of the North Circular Road and Summerhill shortly before 4.00 a.m. yesterday morning.

The stolen car rammed a number of garda patrol cars which were trying to halt it before it slammed into the taxi.

The youths who were arrested today had been kept overnight in the Mater for for injuries received in the crash.

A third teenager is still in a serious condition in St James's Hospital.

The dead man, who has been named as Mr Robert McGowan (30), of Galtymore Road, Drimnagh, Dublin 12, was alone in his taxi at the time of the crash. He died at the scene.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
