Cottbus - A state court found eight east German youths guilty of manslaughter yesterday for an attack on an Algerian asylum-seeker who bled to death after trying to escape a racist mob. Three youths were jailed for two to three years, while five were given suspended terms. A ninth youth involved in the attack received a suspended term after being found guilty of grievous bodily harm. A further two, judged to have played a lesser role, received formal warnings.

Omar Ben Noui died after he and two other Africans were hounded by a skinhead gang through the town of Guben near the Polish border one night in February, 1999.
