The Yugoslav health and labour minister committed suicide today in a hotel room in Madrid, a Yugoslav embassy spokesman said.
Miodrag Kovac's body was discovered hanging in the Eurobuilding Hotel in the Spanish capital with a suicide note nearby. He is believed to have killed himself shortly after midnight.
The spokesman insisted there was no connection with the attempted suicide yesterday in Belgrade of war crimes suspect and former Serbian police chief Mr Vlajko Stojiljkovic, following parliamentary approval of a law allowing arrests and extraditions to a UN court.
However, the embassy could not rule out Mr Kovac had killed himself for political reasons, the spokesman said. He said Mr Kovac's suicide note contained a personal message.
Mr Kovac (54), who was married with three children, was in Spain attending the UN Second Assembly on World Ageing. He was a cardiovascular surgeon and an MP from Montenegro, the junior Yugoslav republic.
