Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko is reported today saying that his rivals should be given senior positions in a newly-formed government.
The Interfax Ukraine news agency reported from Berlin that Mr Yushchenko told reporters it was clear his allies from the "Orange Revolution" would form a ruling coalition, but said relations with other parties should be "constructive".
The Orange Alliance of former Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko and Mr Yushchenko's Our Ukraine party won 44.93 per cent of the vote with just 0.4 per cent of the vote yet to be counted, the Central Election Commission said.
The rival Regions of Ukraine party, led by Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, had 34.31 per cent after Sunday's election.
"We cannot get real political stability unless the three main parties agree on how the coalition and the cabinet must be formed and what relations must be between the ruling coalition and the opposition," Mr Yushchenko said today in a televised address.
The election was called after Mr Yushchenko dissolved Parliament on April 2nd, saying Mr Yanukovych wanted to oust him. The two have been at odds since Mr Yanukovych was declared the winner in a 2004 presidential election that a court later said was rigged.
Mr Yushchenko is a reformist who advocates closer ties wioh the West pro-West while Mr Yanukovych is a pro-Russia, conservative.
