The Spanish Prime Minister, Mr Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has condemned the car bomb attack in Madrid this morning that left 39 people injured.

Mr Zapatero told Basque separatist group ETA that there was no
place in politics for terrorism.

"I would like to say to the terrorists of ETA and those who support them that there is no place for them in politics or civil society - bombs lead only to prison," he told a news conference in Warsaw.

Emergency services said 39 people were wounded in the attack outside Madrid's main convention centre, after the armed Basque separatist group ETA had earlier warned of the blast.

The explosion happened near the entrance to a Madrid convention centre that was to be officially opened by the Spanish royal family later today.

The Spanish king and queen had been due to open a modern arts fair at the city's main convention centre later in the day.

Police said the Basque paramilitary group ETA may be responsible for the explosion after a warning of an attack was made in a call to a Basque newspaper this morning.

Basque newspaper Gara said it received a warning of the attack 35 minutes before the blast.

Police rushed to the scene in an attempt to move people away from the car before it blew up.

An emergency services official said 23 people were taken to hospital.

"Most of the injuries were light or moderate ... cuts and bruises as a result of the blast," the official told Spanish television.
