Apology

David Trimble MP

David Trimble MP

In an article in the edition of March 26th last it was suggested that the explanation provided for Mr Trimble's decision to leave the stage while President Clinton was giving a speech in Omagh in December 2000, namely that he had a plane to catch, was invalid. The article stated that Mr Trimble was later found standing around as the audience left. The Irish Times now accepts that the allegation was wholly untrue, that Mr Clinton's speech was running late, that Mr Trimble did indeed have a plane to catch to Italy to a UN-sponsored conference on terrorism (as Mr Clinton was aware), and that Mr Trimble left for the airport immediately after leaving the stage. We apologise to Mr Trimble for our error.
