Sir, - I note with regret the comments of the chairman of the Payments to Politicians Tribunal, Mr Justice Moriarty, to the effect that certain financial institutions have been unco-operative and unhelpful. He referred to protracted and convoluted correspondence from such institutions and their tardiness or non-compliance in relation to orders in connection with the Tribunal.

The sooner the public becomes fully acquainted with all the facts under investigation by the Tribunal, the sooner all of us in political life can get down to the task of restoring faith in politics and in public life generally.

It is therefore particularly disappointing that institutions which have an important role to play in the economic and commercial life of the State appear to be impeding this process.

Further, given the recent revelations about certain unethical practices in financial institutions, one would have thought that the financial community might adopt a more public-spirited approach. - Yours, etc., Barry Conway,
