IRISH TIMES ODDITIES/HARE FOLLOWS GREYHOUND:The unusual sight of a hare chasing a greyhound is to be seen at Dromoskin, Co Louth, where a hare was caught in a field six weeks previously, when it was only about two weeks' old, writes Allen Foster

Since that time it has been mothered by the dog. And daily follows the hound through the fields and along the roads. Although the hound has killed many rabbits and hares in the past two years, she shows nothing but affection for the hare, which may be seen sleeping on its back at night. When the hare was caught, it was placed beside the greyhound, from whom pups had just been taken, and the pair have been great friends since.

DUMB MAN RECOVERS SPEECH

After being dumb for over 10 years, a professional man from Coblence, Germany, recovered the power of speech after a "nightmare", which caused him to shriek aloud. Since then he has been able to talk again, however, his relatives became convinced of what they had only suspected - namely, that his mind was not altogether normal. A doctor advised his removal to a sanatorium as it was doubtful as to whether his condition was due to his sufferings in the war or whether his mental derangement had been caused by his recent experiences. On the day he was to be taken to a sanatorium he went for a walk and did not return. He was found hanging to a tree in the forest, under circumstances which left no doubt about the condition of his mind.

SURGEONS GRAFT WHOLE JOINTS

Broadcasting yesterday in Moscow radio home service, the Minister of Health of the Russian Federation, Prof NA Vinogradov, said: "We are successfully grafting skin, bones, even whole joints, and fingers and vessels of the gullet. In our laboratories there are animals wandering around with two hearts and replaced kidneys. We are on our way to replacing man's worn out organs with new ones, on the way to the preservation of organs, but these are, so far, only bold experiments."
