Irish-Language Papers

A chara, - I suppose it is better late than never to correct a serious error

A chara, - I suppose it is better late than never to correct a serious error. I refer to Proinsias O Drisceoil's review (The Irish Times, November 20th) of Fainne an Lae agus an Athbheochan, 1898-1900, where he claims that "no subsequent Irish-language newspaper appeared without subsidy".

What about Sean Beaumont's weekly An tEireannach in the hungry Thirties or Inniu, on which Ciaran O Nuallain, brother of Myles, Tarlach O hUid and Seosamh O Domhnaill starved and slaved from its launch until Frank Aiken, as Minister for Finance, gave it a small subsidy in 1948? Likewise with the monthlies such as Comhar, before Aiken's enlightened subsidy scheme. - Is mise,
