Sir, - I find Kevin Myers's lack of awareness of global and human interconnectedness (Irishman's Diary, August 23rd) both frightening and dangerous. In particular his statement that the lifestyles of the rich and death through poverty in Africa are "unrelated issues" totally denies the reality that 25 per cent of the world's population enjoy the benefits of 75 per cent of the world's resources. His entire article is based on the false premise that the only connection between rich and poor is misguided charity by the rich towards the poor, rather than structural injustice, which is the major obstacle to self-help.Perhaps this might become clear to him if his final suggestion were to be realised. If we "leave Africa to learn it alone" the material base of our "living well" would disappear. The real question is not: when are we going to stop giving to the poor?; but rather: when are we going to stop taking from the poor? - Yours, etc.,From VINCE MURRAYSt Angela's College, Lough Gill, Co Sligo.
