Sir, – Further to Frank McNally’s piece about the veneration of St Ronan in Brittany, there was a darker side too (An Irishman’s Diary, June 1st).
In his interesting book about Irish saints abroad (Les Saints irlandais hors d’Irlande), Louis Gougaud tells us that on the island of Molonez, which has a treacherous coastline, there was a prayer to St Ronan asking him to send more ships onto their rocks so that they could plunder them! – Yours, etc,
