Capital’s bus app needs update

One app to rule them all

Sir, – A number of recent letter writers highlighted the shortcomings of the Dublin Bus real-time app (Letters, May 13th and 14th). Lucky them!

Spare a thought for those of us who use any of the 32 public bus routes in Dublin which do not appear on the Dublin Bus app. Instead of real-time information, the Transport for Ireland (TFI) app gives “expected” times for these buses. Expected times are simply a bus’s timetable – no information is given if the bus is delayed, although the all too often cancelled buses are shown.

These buses look almost exactly the same as “regular” Dublin buses and apparently have GPS technology installed. App aside, their only difference appears to be their operator, a private bus company.

Having two very different apps is not convenient and does not help connect Dublin’s public transport network. Surely it’s possible for all the providers of a city’s public bus service to be part of the same real-time app? – Yours, etc,
