Sir, – Who can be in the least bit surprised that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has warned that we are unlikely to meet our climate targets? (“Ireland unlikely to meet climate targets, EPA warns”, News, June 1st).
Our collective efforts regarding climate action have a distinct ring of St Augustine’s prayer about them. If you listen carefully, you can just make out the Government whispering, “Lord make us take action, but not yet.”
Plans are useless without action. Denialism, cognitive dissonance and pandering to vested interests are all resulting in a kind of semi-paralysis. It’s just not good enough.
Whataboutery is also very much in vogue. But a group of people standing in a circle, pointing at each other, will go nowhere. Where is the leadership on this, the defining issue of our age? – Yours, etc,
