Sir, – In the light of a series of frauds perpetrated by people employed by charities, it seems odd that the Charities Regulator does not require registered charities to produce and publish audited financial statements showing how the funds controlled by them are spent.
The regulator has confirmed to me in writing that “there is currently no requirement” for the Charities Regulator to publish copies of a charity’s accounts.
However, they say “we would expect that a charity produce unabridged (full) financial accounts and make sure that these and the charity’s annual report are widely available and easy for everyone to access”.
Note that they use the word “expect” rather than the word “require” charities to keep and publish details of how they spend their funds.
