Sir, –Further to recent correspondence (June 25th and June 28th), I am reminded of my parents’ epic journey back in 1968 when they drove from Dundalk, overland and by ferry, to Lisbon in Portugal, across the width of Spain, up through France to Le Havre, in our trusty VW beetle car, with three children in the back and another one on the way, without seatbelts or air conditioning or satnav, and with a family tent and all the camping gear on the roof rack under a “tarpaulin”, along with a wooden crate containing a month’s supply of Campbell’s soup and Cadbury’s Smash.
