Conservative leadership contest

Asylum and migration

Sir, – In his praise for the UK’s Conservative Party, Barry Walsh states it is likely the new prime minister will be the UK’s first from an ethnic minority, considering that seven of the initial 12 seeking leadership were immigrants themselves or the children of immigrants (Letters, July 12th). In their hurried efforts to protect their borders by exiting the EU with its free movement of people, the Conservative government rolled out a new immigration system based on a 70-point requirement and further announced a plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda. In a policy that is hostile to immigrants, do those now aspiring to become prime minister share any sympathy for the people who strive to navigate today’s complex immigration system to enter their country? The irony is that the answer to that question is simply, no. – Yours, etc,
