Remembering David Trimble

A man of his word

Sir, – David Trimble provoked a considerable degree of irritation and animosity in this part of Ireland during his time in Northern politics, especially in the aftermath of “Drumcree 1995″ when he paraded down the Garvaghy Road alongside Ian Paisley and the Orangemen. More thoughtful, representative and considerate depictions of him are being referenced now on his passing.

Especially in the context of present times, Bertie Ahern’s assertion that “he stuck by what he negotiated and as difficult as he was in negotiations once he signed off on something he stuck by it” says much, perhaps everything, about the man. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL GANNON,

Kilkenny.
