Sir, – Austin Francis (Letters, August 2nd) is the latest of many to suggest that the reason women soccer players simply get up and keep playing after being fouled while the men pretend to be in agony and require medical attention is that women have a stronger sense of fair play.
A more plausible explanation might be that they are not being fouled by the likes of Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk. He is 1.9m (6ft 4in) tall, weighs more than 90kg and over short distances, such as going into a tackle, reaches speeds equivalent to those of a women’s 100m Olympic gold medallist. – Is mise,
