A choice of oaths

The case for non-religious options

Sir, – With reference to Michael Nugent and Jane Donnelly, Atheist Ireland (Letters, August 2nd), I would like to suggest a simple solution which satisfies all persons taking religious oaths when taking up senior public office positions. Offer a choice of oaths; one including God, and one without reference to God. The person taking the oath can then choose which they prefer. It seems a simple solution to me.

It’s about choice, and it would avoid all this unnecessary debate over religious preference. – Yours, etc,

NORA GOREY,

Dundrum, Dublin 14.
