Sir, – How times have changed. Our 1950s house has a distance of more than 60m from our back door to our neighbour’s. That’s almost four times the proposal of 16m made by Glenveagh homes to the Minister (“Plan to solve housing crisis recommends smaller gardens”, News, August 4th).
It makes you wonder just how many more homes could have been built in the suburbs had the gardens not been so long. It was lovely having a big garden for our children to play in but as you grow older, you don’t really need all of that space, not to mention the time and effort that goes into maintaining it. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I noted with distaste Glenveigh’s proposal to resolve the housing crisis by reducing mandatory garden sizes (“Plan to solve housing crisis recommends smaller gardens”, News, August 4th). I wonder why they imagine the next generation of home buyers should be forced to accept lower and lower standards for higher and higher prices? It sounds like Glenveigh are trying to walk the Government up the proverbial garden path?
