Sir, – Your testimonial of the experiences of small landlords was depressing but sadly predictable (“‘The house was a mess, and the bill came to €9,000. It broke me’: Life as a small landlord”, August 15th).
When you create an unfair system you create unfair outcomes. It should be noted that this anti-landlord system has been introduced by Fianna Fail and Fine Gael, who are both centre-right, pro-market political parties.
Imagine what the system would have been like if we had a left-wing government? Perhaps after the next general election, we will find out.
If this isn’t a good reason for small landlords to flee an unprofitable, unfair system, what is?
Marty Morrissey gets an A+ in new football rules, even if some pundits aren’t yet sold
Breda O’Brien: Nicole Kidman’s Babygirl isn’t the ‘hottest film this year’. It might be among the most depressing
High noon for developer Paddy Kelly, who faces run-in with the sheriff over unpaid rent arrears
Pat Leahy: Angry Dáil scenes were partly the result of Sinn Féin’s determination to be a more aggressive Opposition
Sadly, the only people who will suffer the loss of small landlords are tenants. – Yours, etc,
