Sir, – Fair play to Niamh Byrne (Letters, August 18th) for calling this hare-brained scheme out for what it is.
The unfortunate people who end up in this west Dublin town are going to be cut off and isolated no matter what grandiose plans Dublin City Council and South Dublin Council have in mind.

Sir, – I trust that the first buildings that appear in this new town will be schools and shops and community facilities.
I live in hope, but I’m sure we will repeat the disaster that was Tallaght in the 1970s.
Of course, similar theories were propounded by Ebenezer Howard in Garden Cities of Tomorrow (1902), applied in Welwyn Garden City in 1920, succeeding Letchworth Garden City (1903). Hopefully planners will resurrect and study Ebenezer’s writings.
They might also usefully read Defensible Space by Oscar Newman published in 1970s.
Newman says that, “Architectural and environmental design plays a crucial part in increasing or reducing criminality”.
