Taxing and spending

Stimulating growth

Sir, – Bill Redmond writes that cutting taxes is “the exact opposite of what is needed in a recession” (Letters, August 31st).

Sadly this idea seems to be all-pervasive in the new post-Covid spend, spend era in which we live. Cutting taxes is exactly what is needed. Cutting taxes and red tape stimulates growth, as we saw from the economic boom here starting in the 1990s. What is also needed in tandem with tax cuts is a forensic look at how taxes are spent. Sadly, in neither Fintan O’Toole’s “Thatcherite” UK, nor in our cosy social democracy, is any effort being put into looking closely at what our taxes are being spent on. – Yours, etc,

PAUL WILLIAMS,
