Sir, – While reading the two gloomy letters (Letters, October 5th) responding to Eoin Ó Broin’s article on solving the housing crisis (Opinion & Analysis, September 3rd), it occurred to me that Sinn Féin has most certainly arrived as a serious contender to lead the next government. It is well established that pessimism leads to obscurity, optimism to power. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I agree with everything Eoin Ó Broin writes about the housing crisis, except his suggestion of a referendum to enshrine the right to housing. Shrines represent pious hope.
We elect governments to legislate, to make and implement policy. The present Government has signally failed on all three counts. If we are to legislate by referendum, we don’t need government. – Yours, etc,
