Liz Truss takes over at No 10

A crowded agenda

Sir, – In his final speech as British prime minister, Boris Johnson said that he was like a booster rocket that will “be gently re-entering the atmosphere and splashing down invisibly in some remote and obscure corner of the Pacific”. Given the mess he has left behind, I would guess that many people in the UK are wishing that, for once, he was telling the truth. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Now that Liz Truss has reached No 10, the NI protocol will no doubt be back on the agenda, if not with the UK government, certainly with the Irish politicians on both sides of the Border. Hopefully, the time-out may have made the DUP realise that the cost of boiling a kettle is more important now to their electorate than their silly objections to the protocol. Wishful thinking? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – So, Liz’s credo is: I am Boris without the fluff; I got the job and now I will keep the job! – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Denis Staunton (World, September 2nd), says that in 2016 Liz Truss “campaigned eloquently against leaving the European Union”, but just two paragraphs later he describes her as “a notoriously awkward public speaker”. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Those who are sneering at the United Kingdom for having three changes of prime minister in six years would do well to bear in mind that this December, Ireland will have its third change of Taoiseach in just over five years. – Yours, etc,
