Sir, – I welcome the possible introduction of an “accommodation tax” for tourists, as advocated by the Tax and Welfare Commission (News, September 3rd). It is something for which I have advocated for decades and was included in my personal submission to the commission.
It would however make far greater, economic, financial and democratic sense if such a tax were to be determined by each local council at the time of their budget meetings and ringfenced for expenditure in that area. In that way, the raising and spending of money would be determined locally and accountable locally.
