Support for Iranian women

Government must voice concern

Sir, – The Irish Government needs to join other countries in expressing its deep concern to the Iranian government at the death of Mahsa Amini in Tehran after being arrested and detained by the Iranian morality police for improperly wearing her hijab, as well as expressing its support for Iranian women who oppose laws relating to the compulsory wearing of the hijab.

The Government once thought it important to appoint a special envoy on freedom of opinion and expression to the UN.

Choosing freely to wear or not to wear a hijab for religious or non-religious reasons is a matter of personal freedom of expression which must be supported by the international community as part of its wider advocacy for equal civil rights for half of the world’s population. – Yours, etc,

CHRIS FITZPATRICK,
