Political implications of NI census

Sir, – Gregory Campbell of the DUP warned against the dangers of using religious headcounts for political purposes as the census results were announced in Northern Ireland.

But 100 years ago, the boundaries of the Northern Ireland state were carefully carved out employing precisely such headcounts to ensure a “Protestant parliament for a Protestant people”. Now that the wheels have come off his wagon, he seems to be selling an inclusive Northern Ireland but conveniently forgets all those years of discrimination and gerrymandering and denial of civil rights.

Not to mention the DUPs manufactured objections to the NI protocol which have denied the people the new Executive which they voted for. Is it because the result reflected the new, but not necessarily religious, headcount? – Yours, etc,
