Walking in Dublin

Local democracy

Sir, – There was a certain irony in your photograph of walkers on Custom House Quay (September 24th) accompanying the report on the international conference held to promote walking.

Well over a year ago, I had a motion proposing that Custom House Quay be closed to traffic on Saturdays and Sundays passed overwhelmingly by the elected members of Dublin City Council. The aim was to create, at very little cost, a new pedestrian-friendly space in the heart of the city.

However, the unelected officials “did not think it necessary”, so it never happened. That’s local government, Irish style. – Yours, etc,

Cllr DERMOT LACEY,
