Sir, – In “Islamic women get little solidarity from western sisters’' (Opinion & Analysis, September 27th), Anne Harris refers to “... the 1979 revolution, which overthrew the shah’s democracy”.

Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was an autocrat who ruled his country for decades with an iron fist; he scarcely knew the meaning of the word “democracy’'. – Yours, etc,
