Making their mark

Sir, – Colm Keena’s Irishman’s Diary (“Making their mark: Colm Keena on revealing graffiti on a French castle’s walls”, October 3rd) reminded me of a sad piece of graffiti that I read some 30 years ago on the famous Windmill Lane Studios wall, when I took my young daughter to that hallowed shrine for U2 devotees.

My daughter remains a devotee but somehow I feel the cry from the heart penned by a disappointed young Spaniard may have been obliterated by the garish spray-painted artwork of later fans.

Written in Spanish, it simply and plaintively read: “We arrived, we saw no one, it rained, we missed the bus.”

We didn’t see anyone either but at least it didn’t rain and we didn’t miss the bus. – Yours, etc,
