Young people’s voices

Pensions, housing and climate

Sir, – Pat O’Mahony (Letters, October 7th) supports the opinion by Eoin MacLachlan that “It’s ‘Generation Rent’ who will be paying for pensions”(Opinion, October 6th). In doing so, he decries the lack of political voice for young people.

Whatever about the myriad of problems facing young people, including housing and climate, I believe they are not remotely concerned or interested in the pension age or who funds same, or of any perceived inter-generational injustice. It is simply not on their youthful agenda. A non-inflation indexed State pension will not be an intolerable burden on young people nor should it lead to a pension funding crisis. The State pension is one of Ireland’s successful policies not failures and should be lauded and supported by all.

Should climate change be an intolerable burden, I am sure pensions will be last thing young people will need to worry about. – Yours, etc,

AIDAN RODDY,
