Sir, – As the number of tenants far exceeds that of landlords, surely it follows that enacting legislation, favouring tenants and opposed by landlords, such as banning evictions, must be viewed as populist. The legislators may create the impression that “we’re doing something”. However, the legislation won’t contribute to one extra rental property becoming available. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – In discussions on the current housing crisis, a number of politicians have bemoaned the fact that private landlords are being “forced out” of the business. I am slightly confused about this. First, I suspect that many landlords are merely taking advantage of high property prices to maximise their profits.
Furthermore, if they are selling it is surely either to other landlords or to home buyers. Either way, this is not exacerbating the problem and may, in the latter case, actually help to solve it. – Yours, etc,
