Give up yer aul seats

Force of habit

Sir, – Sean Foley’s observations of the lack of courtesy on the Dart (Letters, October 19th) prompted a long-forgotten memory for me.

Having travelled on public transport to school from junior infants onwards, we were well schooled to offer our seats to anybody who probably needed them more than we did and we did so on practically every journey. Fast-forward two decades and I’m sitting on the 38A travelling home from work when a pregnant woman boarded the full bus. When I saw no one offering a seat, I automatically stood to offer my own, only to sit down promptly as I was seven months pregnant myself!

Aul habits are sometimes good habits. – Yours, etc,

COLETTE DAVIS,
