Sir, – Iran has decided to back the malevolent Russian war in Europe, no doubt content that influencing a state of chaos in Ukraine, as in Gaza and Lebanon, is politically advantageous. Meanwhile its regime assaults Iranian citizens over matters of clothing. Elsewhere, President Xi of China continues to threaten Taiwan and controls his people through heavy-handed Covid restrictions.
Here in Ireland, we are entertained by UK politics and our own local political machinations. But if people are sympathetic to the Russian, Iranian or Chinese way of life then they should ponder a little on where freedom of expression is taken for granted and those other places where the value of “systems” overrides the right to individual freedom.
Comparatively speaking, we are fortunate. Value that. – Yours, etc,
