GAA euphemisms

A cultural blind spot about violence

A chara, – Jennifer O’Connell tells us the GAA has at its disposal “an entire thesaurus of euphemisms” for acts of violence which happen in its games (“The GAA has a cultural blind spot about violence”, Opinion & Analysis, October 22nd). She goes on to list 18 of these, including melee, fracas, tussle, brawl, infraction and handbags. Surprisingly, she omits the jewel of them all, made famous by legendary GAA commentator Michael O’Hehir – a bit of a schemozzle. – Is mise,
