Sir, – Laura Slattery’s excellent article on the PwC Net Zero Economy Index highlights the need for much greater urgency in the transition away from fossil fuels (“No country is decarbonising fast enough, PwC study finds”, October 19th).
The article echoes findings published a week earlier by the UK’s House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee that we are not addressing the climate emergency effectively enough.
Based on evidence from a wide range of experts, the committee concluded that “without changes to people’s behaviours now, the target of net zero by 2050 is not achievable”.
From our work with community groups and businesses, we know that people in Ireland are ready to make those changes in their lifestyles, but that they need support.

People want to know how to play their part, and where to start.
In Ireland, we are lucky to have a wealth of expertise in the area of behaviour change, and organisations such as Global Action Plan stand ready to provide guidance on the transformational power of small, informed climate actions.
By focusing on the changes we can make in our habits relating to travel, food and energy use, for instance, we can highlight how each and every one of us can be part of the solution. You don’t have to be an expert to become a climate hero. – Yours, etc,
