Dublin and the local property tax

LPT needs to be reformed

Sir, – Cian McKenna’s assertion (October 26th) that only the Green Party voted against the reduction of the local property tax (LPT) is incorrect.

Since the commencement of the LPT, the Labour Group on Dublin City Council has recognised that it could be a source of some additional funding for the city and every year to date has voted against reduction and published a specific budget as to how the additional income would be spent.

We welcomed the support of the Green Party and the Social Democrats to that approach.

LPT needs to be reformed and genuinely retained for the council which it is collected.

Cian McKenna is right, however, that we also need councillors who will recognise the fact that in order to spend money you need to raise it. – Yours, etc,

Dublin City Council),
