Sir, – Catherine Cleary claims that induction hobs are more efficient and cleaner than a gas hob (“The one kitchen switch that will save you time and money”, Life & Style, October 24th).
According to the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, using natural gas as your primary energy source produces 31 per cent less carbon compared to using electricity and based on delivered energy cost (cent/kWh), natural gas is 73 per cent more affordable than electricity.
This makes it quite clear that a gas hob is a more efficient option from both a cost and environmental perspective.
The Government has consistently referred to natural gas as a “transition” fuel that should be used to bridge the gap between oil, coal, turf, and green electricity. Gas Networks Ireland are already taking steps towards decarbonisation with the introduction of biomethane and hydrogen blends into the existing gas grid, all towards Ireland’s commitment to a net-zero energy system by 2050.
