Why make the days even darker?

Sir, – This hoary old subject has reared its head in the UK again, and Ireland would have little choice but to follow any change they make. Imagine changing your watch at the Irish Border – or Jeffrey Donaldson changing his at Cairnryan.

The west of Ireland is an hour and 40 minutes behind the sun when Daylight Saving Time is in force. If it were applied year-round, it would be pitch-black in Galway and Westport until after 9am in December, darker than Aberdeen or the Shetlands.

Be careful what you wish for. Longitude matters.
