Sir, – Your excellent report on racial profiling in the North (“Ethnic minorities fear being racially profiled during immigration checks in North,” News, October 24th) brought back memories of many years ago when I first came to Dublin for work.
The comment by Ms Seenoi-Barr struck a chord: “It’s not pleasant, where you’re just anticipating that you’re going to be stopped.” Often, I had to travel from Dublin Airport and was stopped for a baggage inspection every single time. So, it was easy for the customs officers to spot the lone Asian guy in a group of Irish or European passengers.
I am happy to note the situation has changed over time. The blatant profiling is no longer there – that maybe due to more sensitivity training or the sheer number of non-European passengers passing through customs.
