Sir, – You are correct to warn in your editorial “A looming threat to democracy” (November 8th) of the dangers of a Trump-led Republican Party’s success in the US midterm elections. The Republicans have no coherent economic plan to deal with inflation. The party has issued policy statements, which if implemented, would undermine the social security programme, Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act that millions of Americans highly depend upon.
On a political level, state officials generally oversee the conduct of election voting and the counting of votes. The pro-Trump candidates for such positions have implied they will consider any result they oppose as being “flawed”.
Waiting in the shadows is Mr Trump himself, willing to descend on the American political system again, with the aim of chaos for all.
The future of democracy in America may well depend on the polls being wrong, and that the Democrats can hold on to majorities in the House and Senate. – Yours, etc,
