Climate crisis and agriculture

The national herd

Sir, – I disagree with David McCarter’s suggestion that the whole world should go vegan (Letters, November 12th).

The animals out in the fields eating grass are not the real problem. It’s the ones who spend their whole lives in sheds being fed cereals that could otherwise be used on the human menu.

If all bovines had to live outside all year round, that in itself would curb the national herd due to lack of space. This also might encourage our farmers to abandon the huge continental cattle and return to the Irish native breeds which, being smaller, would be less harmful to the land in wet conditions. These indigenous cattle are bred to survive our land and climate. Everything in moderation. – Yours, etc,

ANNE STRAHAN,
